What is a Bone Graft?

A bone graft is often a preliminary treatment that’s part of the dental implant process. More specifically, it’s when a qualified periodontist or oral surgeon takes bone material from one source (which can be either organic or synthetic) and “grafts” it onto another source – which is, in this case, your jawbone. Since the grafting material is biocompatible, it will gradually fuse with your mandible, giving it the density and strength you need to support successful dental implants.
Generally, dentists put bone grafts into two distinct categories, based on when the graft is performed.
Bone Grafts After Tooth Loss

This is sometimes called a “delayed bone graft,” simply because it’s performed when a patient has already experienced some jawbone loss. Your Morgan Hill periodontist will administer a local anesthetic, make a small incision in your gumline, carefully place the graft material near areas where the bone is weak, then suture your gums closed. We may also place a special membrane on top of the graft to encourage proper healing.
Bone Grafts After Tooth Extraction

Your periodontist can also perform a bone graft directly after tooth extraction. You may hear this referred to as “socket preservation” because it’s meant to prevent future bone loss. The process is similar to a “delayed bone graft,” except that we’ll start the procedure on the same day as your extraction.
What Are the Benefits of Bone Grafting?

The main benefit of a bone graft in Morgan Hill is that it can enable patients who have experienced significant jawbone loss to receive dental implants. There are other advantages, though, including:
- Preventing bite issues
- Restoring your oral structure
- Improving your chewing power
- Preserving your youthful facial features
