What Is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is sort of like a cap for your tooth. It’s designed to blend in naturally with the rest of your smile, and provides full coverage against sneaky bacteria and chewing pressure. Our dental crowns are made with high-quality porcelain or zirconia, which are durable, tooth-colored materials. That’s right – there’s no glaring metal amalgam involved! When you look in the mirror, you’ll hardly be able to tell any dental work was done at all.

The Process of Getting a Dental Crown

The first step to getting a dental crown is preparing your tooth for treatment. Damaged teeth often have jagged edges that need to be smoothed down, and we’ll likely have to reshape your tooth slightly to ensure the crown will fit properly. We’ll then take digital impressions of your mouth and provide you with a temporary crown that will protect your pearly white for the next two weeks.

You see, the next step in the process is to send your digital impressions to a dental lab. The skilled technicians there will use those impressions to craft the fully customized version of your crown. Between meticulously shaping the crown and shade-matching it to your smile, it will take about two weeks for the technicians to send us your permanent restoration.

Once we do receive your permanent crown, we’ll call you back to the office so we can get it placed and polished. Then your treatment will be considered complete!

Benefits of Getting a Dental Crown

Dental crowns are an essential treatment for any dentist’s “tool box,” and it’s easy to see why. Severe damage can cause a tooth to break under pressure that wouldn’t normally be an issue, and cracks are the perfect hiding place for cavity-causing bacteria. A crown protects a tooth from all of these hazards, and restores a smile’s seamless appearance.

Porcelain and zirconia crowns in particular are both aesthetically pleasing and durable. With proper care, our dental crowns could last you 15 years or more!
