How Invisalign Works

Orthodontic treatment is effective because it applies consistent, gentle pressure to the teeth, which causes them to gradually shift over time. Traditional braces use brackets and wires to accomplish that, but Invisalign uses a series of custom clear aligners instead.

After we design your treatment and you receive your aligners, you should wear each set for as much as possible each day (20 – 22 hours). Periodically (every 7 – 14 days or so), you will switch to new aligners. As you work your way through your entire series, your teeth should gradually reach their new, ideal positions.

Indications for Invisalign

Invisalign is able to address a wide range of mild to moderate types of dental misalignment. Here is an overview of some of the issues that it is commonly used to correct:

Crowded Teeth

Overlapping and crowded teeth tend to trap food between them, thereby increasing your risk of decay and gum disease. We may use Invisalign to shift your teeth in a way that allows for easier oral hygiene and improved functionality.

Gaps Between Teeth

Gaps between your teeth may make you feel self-conscious about your appearance, and that extra space can leave your gums vulnerable to harm. Invisalign may be able to move your teeth closer together and close those unwanted gaps.

Bite Alignment

Malocclusions, such as overbite, underbite, open bite, and crossbite, can significantly affect your oral function and facial appearance. Invisalign aligners can often correct such issues.

The Benefits of Invisalign

Invisalign offers some outstanding benefits:

  • Invisalign is a discreet treatment option. The aligners are clear and almost invisible when they are on the teeth.
  • You can eat what you enjoy. The aligners should be removed at mealtimes, so there is no need to worry about dietary restrictions.
  • Invisalign is designed for comfort. The aligners are made from smooth plastic rather than metal wires or brackets.
  • You can enjoy easier oral hygiene. Since the aligners are removable, you will not have to worry about navigating around brackets and wires while you are brushing and flossing.
  • You will have the potential for fewer orthodontic check-ins. Invisalign appointments may be quicker and less frequent than what would be required with traditional braces.
